York Simcoe Express is pleased to announce the Head Coaches for the 2022/23 season.
U9 - Ciro Naso (formerly Novice)
Ciro has more than 13 years of coaching and on-ice instruction. He grew up playing for York Simcoe Express and shortly after pursed a junior hockey career. He played for the Vaughan Vipers of the OJHL, London Knights of the OHL and the London Nationals of the GOHL.
Professionally, Ciro played in Columbus, Georgia for the Columbus Cottonmouths of the CHL/SPHL. While hockey played an important role in his life, so did his aspirations for becoming a teacher and hockey coach/instructor. Upon completing his undergraduate degree in Kinesiology and Health Sciences, Ciro pursued a Master’s degree focusing on early childhood psychology and teaching.
Ciro was a head instructor at Sk8on Hockey school specializing in stick handling, skating techniques and shooting for many years.
Ciro was the Assistant Coach of 1998 minor bantam York Simcoe Express Hockey team. The team won multiple tournaments along with an O.M.H.A Championship. Ciro was hired as the Assistant Hockey Director at the Toronto French School overseeing all age groups competing within the C.I.S (Canadian Independent Schools).
Ciro is currently coaching Aurora Tigers U9 AA and is pleased to return to York Simcoe Express to continue coaching and helping young players develop.
Bill Mclean - U10 (formerly Minor Atom)
Entering his second year with YSE, Bill brings local high-level coaching experience in both hockey and lacrosse to the team. Bill will continue to draw on his own personal experiences as a player winning divisional, provincial and national championships to help instill a hard-working and goal-oriented team for our youngest players, laying
the foundation for their AAA careers.
Adam Sanderson - U11 (formerly Atom)
Entering his third season as Head Coach with YSE, Adam will continue to develop 2012 born players on next year's U11 team. ‘AJ’ is a former YSE player from 1995-2000, where he helped his team win the OMHA Championships in Minor Bantam. His love of coaching and youth sport have seen AJ as coach of lacrosse, soccer, volleyball and basketball teams. AJ believes in player development and instilling a love of the game in young athletes, as well as in creating a team environment in which players can learn skills that will make them successful both on and off the ice. In addition to his head coaching duties with YSE, AJ serves on the Advisory Committee for the Jays Care Foundation's Challenger Baseball Program for athletes with disabilities. Away from sport, AJ is an educator with the York Catholic District School Board where he has worked as both teacher and administrator.
Ryan Gardner - U12 (formerly Minor Peewee)
In his fourth season as a Head Coach at YSE, Ryan brings a wealth of experience as a player professionally, a skills instructor and as head coach to the association. A YSE alumni as a player, Ryan went on to play three seasons in the OHL and then professionally in Switzerland for 20 years, playing in over 1,200 games and helping lead his teams to the Swiss National Championship on four occasions. Ryan competed in the IIHF World Championships in 2008, 2010 and 2012, winning Silver medal in 2013. He also competed in the Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia in 2014 and played 5 years with Team Canada at the Spengler Cup. Ryan also brings extensive skills training from his experiences as a skills coach with The Pro Hockey School and Murphy Hockey School.
U13 - Kyle Bishop (formerly Peewee)
Entering his fifth year with YSE, the association is excited to announce Kyle Bishop as the Head Coach for the U13 team. Prior to coaching, Kyle had a very successful tenure in the NOJHL winning a league championship in 2014 with Kirkland Lake JR. A. Following his Junior years, Kyle received a hockey scholarship to Lindenwood University just outside of St. Louis, MO, where he assisted his team to the National Championship tournament 3 out of his 4 seasons.
Kyle brings a positive, high energy and fun environment that emphasizes on player development through a strong work ethic, creativity and attention to detail.
Doug Orr – U14 (formerly Minor Bantam)
Another YSE alumni as a player (1992-1997) that the association is proud to have within its coaching ranks, Doug went on to a successful professional playing career overseas after a five-year CIS career at McGill. Doug played a season in the Central Hockey League before four seasons in Germany and the Netherlands where he was consistently ranked among the respective leagues’ scoring leaders. Following his playing career, Doug earned coaching experience with the Hill Academy where he has served in both Head Coaching and General Manager duties as well as a Head Coach within the Markham Majors AAA association before joining YSE. Doug was also a volunteer coach in 2011 with the Stouffville Spirit (Jr. A).
Warren Cooper– U15 (formerly Bantam)
Warren is a York Simcoe Express alumnus who was later drafted 41st overall to the OHL in 2001. He went on to play five years of Junior Hockey, split between the Mississauga Ice Dogs (OHL) and the Wellington Dukes (OJHL). After Junior he played professional hockey in the UHL with the Richmond RiverDogs. Warren earned League Rookie of the Year honours with the Uxbridge Bruins in the 1999-2000 season and was the leading scorer in the OJHL Royal Bank Cup playoffs with the Wellington Dukes. Warren is an HP1 Certified Coach with ten years of coaching experience and is entering his fifth season as a Head Coach with YSE. His YSE U16 team saw nine players drafted in the 2021 OHL Draft.
Rob Shilton – U16 (formerly Minor Midget)
Rob is currently YSE’s longest-tenured head coach entering his 10th season as a Head Coach in the association. In addition to his years of head coaching experience, Rob brings elite experience as a player at the OJHL, OHL and CIS levels. Rob coached YSE’s Minor Bantam team to an OMHA championship in 2012-13 and the Minor Midget team to Silverstick, OMHA and OHL Cup championships in 2015-16 as well as serving as a member of the bench staff for the OMHA championship winning teams in Minor Bantam, Bantam and Minor Midget from 2008-2010. Rob is known for creating a positive, high-paced, fun-environment that is suitable to the development of all players. He prides himself on a coaching philosophy that instils a strong work ethic with the team, establishes a challenging but safe environment and reinforces respect for the game, their teammates and their opponents. Outside of minor hockey, Rob is a marketing professional in the pharmaceutical industry.
U18 - Norm McCauley (formerly Midget)
Norm started his Coaching Career at Miami (Ohio) University in 1984-1986 as he earned his Master’s Degree. Norm has coached numerous Junior Programs: Aurora Eagles, Newmarket 87’s, Barrie Colts, Collingwood Blues and the Aurora Tigers, over the years.
He coached St. Mary’s University in U Sports from 1989-93 and returned to Miami (Ohio) University as an Assistant Coach from 2000-2002.
Norm has spent the past decade coaching various U15, U16 teams with the Barrie Jr. Colts.
Norm is an HP1 Certified Coach and has Hockey Canada Skills Instructor Trained Status. He has also been one of the Development Coaches with the Barrie Jr. Colts. Norm is the Hockey Canada Skills Academy Teacher at St. Joseph’s Catholic High School where he is also a Religion and Leadership Teacher.
