YSE Phase Two of Hockey Programming
On behalf of the York Simcoe Express Board of Directors and coaches, we hope you and your families have kept
healthy and safe since we were last together in December.
With the announcement last week by the Province of Ontario that York Region will return to the Red zone for COVID19 health and safety protocols today, we look forward to being able to resume hockey activities for Phase 2 of the York Simcoe Express Return to Hockey programming.
YSE will resume programming at St. Andrew’s College’s La Brier Family Arena for all eight teams that participated in Phase 1 of Return to Hockey (U10-U18 teams) beginning on Saturday, February 27 and running for nine weeks through to Friday, April 30. Each team will receive four hours of ice per week, but similar to the end of our Phase 1 programming when York Region was also in the Red (control) zone, we will be restricted to 10 players on the ice for each session, and two coaches, until York Region progresses to the Orange (restrict) zone.
The same health and safety protocols, including advance screening and spectators not permitted in the arena, will be in place for Phase 2 of YSE’s Return to Hockey programming until local public health regulations permit changes.
Please find attached link to OHF COVID-19 Response Framework for outline of each Return to Hockey phase and relevant restrictions.
As mentioned in the December update, YSE is working with our coaches and hockey operations committee to focus on four pillars to create variety in the Phase 2 programming: individual skill development with guest instructors, position-specific training, team-centred on-ice training and inter-association scrimmages involving appropriate age group pairings and numbers once permitted by local health and safety guidelines and restrictions.
Our priority as we resume is to allow our teams and players to get back on the ice as safely as possible and enjoy a return to normal activities after the challenges of the past two months. We are hopeful that Phase 2 of our programming will see York Region progress to the Orange (restrict) zone which in the OHF framework will allow a return to on-ice competition (whether 3v3/4v4/5v5) in cohorts of 50 or less against teams from an adjacent Public Health Unit. We will continue to keep all members updated as changes to our programming are permitted by local Public Health and the OHF/OMHA.
The cost for YSE’s Phase 2 of Return to Hockey programming will be billed in two payments, with the first payment of $450 (covering the first four weeks of the program) due on March 1 and a second payment due on April 1. While we are working to keep costs for the second half of Phase 2 consistent, we will communicate to members later in March once any changes to regulations and programming is known and pricing can be confirmed.
Each team will receive a follow up communication this week with ice schedules and payment details for all participating members. If any member had confirmed participation for Phase 2 of YSE programming, but has since decided to opt out, please inform your head coach who can notify the association.
As was communicated by the OHF and OMHA in Phase 1 of Return to Hockey programming, it is important to remind all members that participation by players or teams in games not sanctioned by the OMHA is not permitted for 2021 Return to Hockey programs. Any member (player or coach) found to be participating in non-sanctioned games will be ruled ineligible for the duration of the 2020-21 season by the OMHA.
Thank you for your patience and support as we work together to make our Return to Hockey a safe, productive and rewarding experience for all involved. We look forward to seeing all of our players return to the ice later this week.
