Congratulations to YSE alumni Quinton Byfield and Alex Newhook who were named to Team Canada for the upcoming IIHF World Junior Championship to be held in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta.
Byfield was one of eight OHL players who were among the 25 named to Canada’s entry in the 2021 WJC, to be held in Edmonton from Dec. 25 to Jan. 5. The team was announced following a 26-day selection camp in Red Deer, Alberta.
Byfield, the 2nd overall pick by the LA Kings in the 2020 NHL Draft, is just one of three returning players from last year's gold medal-winning team. Byfield, originally from Georgina, played seven seasons for YSE from 2011-18 and Newhook, from St. John's, Newfoundland, played two seasons from 2015-17.
The WJC begins on Christmas Day, with three games before Canada kicks off its tournament schedule on Dec. 26 against Germany at 6 p.m. ET. TSN and RDS, the official broadcast partners of Hockey Canada, will broadcast all 28 tournament games and the 10 pre-tournament games that begin Dec. 20.
YSE will be cheering Quinton, Alex and the entire Team Canada on to Gold!
