YSE’s Byfield and Vierling Selected 1st and 2nd Overall in 2018 OHL Priority Selection
Submitted By YSE on Saturday, April 7, 2018
After helping lead the York Simcoe Express Minor Midget team to an OMHA Championship and strong showing at the OHL Cup, Quinton Byfield was widely projected all season to be the first overall pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection. On Saturday, the Sudbury Wolves made it official when they selected the Express captain as a cornerstone for their program.

One pick later, Evan Vierling showed just how important he was to the Express’ success this season, and the impact he made on OHL observers, when he was taken second off the board by the Flint Firebirds to make it a 1-2 punch at the top of the draft board for the York Simcoe Express.

“Quinton and Evan got stronger and stronger as the season progressed and they are very deserving of this honour,” said Minor Midget head coach Ilir Mehmeti. “They are everything that an OHL team would want on draft day: unselfish, always looking to get better and they always step up in the big moments. We are all very proud of their accomplishments and wish them every success as they move on to the next step in their careers.”

Byfield earned OMHA ETA Minor Midget Player of the Year honours with a league-high 92 points in 34 games scoring 48 goals and 44 assists captaining the Express to gold at the OMHA championship.  He also added four goals and three assists for seven points in six games at the OHL Cup powered by Under Armour helping York-Simcoe reach the tournament’s Semi-Finals.

After a 2017-18 season that saw him rack up 53 points in 33 regular season games, Vierling finished tied for third in the OHL Cup scoring, registering five goals, five assists and 10 points over six games and being named to the tournament All Star team. The Aurora native had points in five of YSE’s OHL Cup contests, coming through in the clutch for a tournament-leading four game winning goals.
