Both YSE Teams Take Gold In 2nd Annual Steamtrain Shootout Tournament This Weekend

This past weekend, York Simcoe Express hosted the 2nd Annual Steamtrain Shootout, a tournament for the Minor Atom and Atom age groups. The weekend was a great success with the YSE teams in BOTH divisions defending their home ice and taking home the gold medal!

The Minor Atom team, coached by Ken Heinrich, dug deep to earn their way into the playoffs as the 4th seed before going on to dismantle the top-seeded Markham Waxers 5-0 in the Semi-Final on Sunday morning at St. Andrew College’s La Brier Arena. They would then defeat the Whitby Wildcats 3-2 in the championship game to earn gold. Colin Ellsworth was named tournament MVP for the YSE Minor Atoms.

“We’re all very proud of the boys,” said Coach Ken. “They were excited to play host at this tournament and to represent YSE well. This win is a great stepping stone for this group and it’s a result that we hope will help propel this team on to strong results the rest of the season.”

Coach Darin Chapman’s Atom team entered the playoff round as the 2nd seed where they defeated the Oshawa Minor Generals in the semi-finals before facing the top-seeded Rochester Monarchs in the Championship game. YSE would avenge a round-robin loss to the Monarchs with a 4-2 win to take the gold medal. Cayden Smith was the Atom team’s tournament MVP.

“For the YSE Atom teams to win this tournament in its first two years is a great accomplishment for the YSE program and something that I know the players will look back on with pride one day,” said Coach Darin. “It’s a great feeling to host these teams in our rinks and show them first-hand why YSE is such a strong minor hockey association.”

Congratulations to both teams and a special thank you to organizer Graham Brown and the many volunteers from both teams who helped make the tournament a huge success. We look forward to continued success for YSE’s teams at next year’s Steamtrain Shootout!
